Echoes of Discernment

The Bereans welcomed Paul’s message eagerly, then opened God’s Word to examine what he taught. Their eagerness and careful examination belonged together. They were willing to hear, and they wanted to know whether the message was true.

Paul proclaimed Jesus as the Messiah who suffered and rose from the dead. The Bereans examined that proclamation against the Scriptures they had received. God’s promises gave them grounds to recognize the crucified and risen Christ. Their searching reached a conclusion and many believed.

We can be drawn to a message because the speaker is convincing or because it agrees with something we already want to believe. The Bereans invite us to receive teaching with an open ear while allowing God’s Word to govern our judgment. Even a trusted voice remains accountable to what God has revealed.

That examination also places us beneath the truth we discover. We cannot faithfully search the Bible while refusing to be corrected by it. When God’s Word exposes an assumption or confirms something we have resisted, faith receives His correction and responds. The risen Jesus whom Paul proclaimed remains Lord over the messenger and everyone who hears.

Echoes of discernment.
