Echoes of Discernment

When God told Solomon, “Ask. What should I give you?” the possibilities were enormous. Solomon could have asked for long life, wealth, or victory over his enemies. Instead, he recognized the weight of what had been placed before him and asked for an understanding heart—to discern between good and evil.

His request begins with dependence. Solomon knew that seeing clearly was not simply a matter of intelligence or confidence. He needed wisdom that came from God.

That need has not disappeared. We are surrounded by voices telling us what is good, what is true, and what should matter most. Some choices are obviously wrong. Others arrive wrapped in good intentions, persuasive arguments, or desires that seem reasonable. Discernment requires more than choosing what feels right. It begins by submitting our judgment to God.

Solomon’s wisdom would remain imperfect, but his request points beyond himself. Jesus Christ is the greater Son of David, risen and reigning, and in Him “are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). We do not seek wisdom as though Christ were absent. We seek to see faithfully beneath the authority of the King who already reigns.

When the choices before us are difficult, we can ask God for wisdom and bring our judgment beneath His Word.
